Results of Broome County Parks Survey

(BINGHAMTON, NY) Broome County Department of Planning has released the results of its Parks Survey. This survey was mailed to Broome County residents and available online this fall.

The department received 891 completed surveys and more than 300 comments and ideas.

Response Highlights:

The most popular recreational activities in Broome County are Hiking, Walking, and Running (25%), Nature Observation (13%) and Boating/Paddling (10%).

 

The most visited parks in Broome County are Otsiningo Park in the Town of Dickinson and Dorchester Park in Whitney Point. The least visited parks: Hawkins Pond Nature Area in Windsor and Aqua Terra Park in the Town of Binghamton.

Overall, 88% of respondents rated Broome County Parks as “Excellent” or “Good” and 81% of respondents found Park Cleanliness overall was either “Excellent” or “Good” 

 

27% of respondents said they travel outside of Broome County to another park facility because, “They offer unique natural settings not available in Broome County.”  This represents an opportunity to attract more visitors to County parks.

 

The top three things residents want to see added to County parks was a Fitness Track (10%), Off-Leash Dog Park (9%), and Bicycle Rental (9%).

 

The number one response for how to spend the limited parks budget was: Maintain/Upgrade existing facilities followed by Develop New Trails, and Add New Amenities.

 

The Broome County Planning Department and Parks and Recreation Department will be taking the results and looking at ideas such as incorporating new trail signage, paved parking areas and better restroom facilities to encourage more visits to Broome County parks. In addition, the county will be researching ways to improve river access and promote paddling/boating in the area.
