Broome County Police Agencies to Participate in Special STOP-DWI Effort

BINGHAMTON, NY - Local law enforcement will be involved once again this year in the “STOP-DWI Crackdown Weekends” Campaign which kicks off this St. Patrick's Day weekend. St. Patrick's Day is usually a time of celebration for many local residents and local police want to make sure people are celebrating wisely and safely.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon at the Broome County Sheriff's Office, Broome County Executive Barbara J. Fiala, Broome County Sheriff David Harder and other local law enforcement representatives announced a plan to team up this weekend in an attempt to reduce the incidence of drunk driving.

In addition to the St. Patrick's Day weekend, the “STOP-DWI Crackdown Weekends” Campaign will target Memorial Day Weekend, May 25th-28th, the Fourth of July holiday week, Labor Day Weekend of August 31st-September 3rd, National Life Savers Weekend December 14th-16th and finally the holiday period that runs December 21st-January 1st.

While STOP-DWI efforts across New York State have led to significant reductions in the number of alcohol related fatalities, still too many lives are being lost because of crashes caused by drunk or impaired drivers. Highly visible, highly publicized efforts like Broome County's “STOP-DWI Crackdown Weekends” Campaign aim to reduce the numbers even further.
