Volunteers Needed For 2006 Riverbank Cleanup

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Broome County Environmental Management Council (EMC) needs energetic captains and crews to register for the 21st annual Broome County Riverbank Clean Up. The event is Saturday, October 7, 2006, rain or shine from 9 a.m. until 12 noon, at various locations along the Susquehanna, Chenango and Tioughnioga rivers and their many tributaries in Broome County. If we experience seriously inclement weather, the Clean up will be held the following weekend on Saturday, October 14, 2006.

Last year, despite severe flooding, 19 groups, comprised of 177 volunteers (out of 385 registrants and 32 registered groups), retrieved over 2,000 pounds of garbage, illegally dumped trash, and flood carried debris at 15 of 21 registered sites along waterways. The Broome County EMC is a registered participant in the International River and Coastal Clean Up sponsored in New York State by the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society and internationally by the Ocean Conservancy.

For registration information, or to suggest a site for cleanup, please contact EMC at 607.778.2116 or smerola@co.broome.ny.us. The registration deadline is Friday, September 22nd, 2006.

The EMC is Broome County's citizen advisory group to the government on environmental matters and the focal point for public participation in local government decisions that affect the County's environment.
