Flood Victims Find Relief at Broome County Landfill

BINGHAMTON, NY - Broome County Executive Barbara Fiala announced today that Broome County will waive the tipping fee at the County Landfill in the Town of Nanticoke for families and businesses hit hard by this weekend's floods.

Pursuant to Section 179-9 of the Broome County Charter and Code, tipping fees normally charged to landfill customers, will be suspended for flood related items only. People can bring their debris to the landfill and fill out a waiver application and dump their items for free. The waiver period, however, will only last until April 19th, 2005.

Municipalities and private haulers that have removed flood debris for property owners, who experienced damage due to the floods, may apply for the fee waiver on behalf of the individual property owner.

The application, filled out either by the individual, or by the municipality or private hauler, should be filed with the Broome County Division of Solid Waste Management at the landfill. The applications can be found at goBroomeCounty.com. You may also call the landfill at 607.763.4434 and they will fax you a copy. Residents and business owners can also fill out the form in person at the landfill.

This fee waiver is only available for flood damaged debris and does not include any other type of refuse. It is also only available to Broome County residents. Again, the fees will be waived only up to and including, April 19th.
